Jon Dunkley

Have you ever wondered why some businesses seem to have all the right words to catch the eye of potential customers? We want to let you in on a little secret; it’s free and you can use it for your business today.

Google’s free keyword planner is a tool that allows you to search for the most popular words and phrases relating to your business. Read on, because we are going to show you exactly how you can use it too!

The Google Keyword Planner here can be used to get search volume data for specific keywords, historical statistics and provide suggestions on other keywords you may not have thought of.

It will also show you how competitive keywords are and the potential cost per click you may expect to pay in a Google Adwords campaign.

How is this keyword information useful to your business?

It allows you to:

  • Gain insights into how people are searching for your product or service.
  • Create web content around themes or topics that are popular.
  • Identify important keywords that can be targeted in your Search Engine Optimisation strategy.

How to use the Google Keyword Planner to identify popular search phrases in 6 easy steps

Step 1. Identify the primary topic, product or service

For example – Tattoo Supplies

Step 2. Sign in to google and go to:

Step 3. Select “Search for new keywords using a phrase, website or category”

Step 4. Enter the primary topic, product or service (from Step 1)

In the first field and select the appropriate targeting. In this example, the online store is selling to everyone in Australia, thus Australia is selected. If it was a small business targeting only the Sunshine Coast, then the region should be changed to Sunshine Coast, QLD, Australia. Click “Get Ideas”.

Step 5. Choose your keywords

At this point, a list of about 701 keyword phrases is displayed. The objective is to choose the most highly searched for phrases that are relevant to your business.

The easiest way to do this is to select all that are relevant and then export the list to an excel file where they can be further refined.

To select a keyword, click on the arrow to the right and “add it to plan”. Once you have added all that are relevant, click on the downward pointing arrow on the far right to “Download Plan”

Step 6.  Sort you keywords by search volume

Open the downloaded excel file and sort the list by “search volume” to give you a rough idea of the most popular search phrases.

You now have a shortlist of popular keywords that can be used in your search engine optimisation strategy.
