Choosing a Digital Agency That’s Right for You and Your Business

Jasmin Cook

The digital marketing landscape is changing so quickly that it can be hard to keep up.  Trying to differentiate between your SEO, CMA, SMM and SEM is hard enough without having to worry if the digital agency you hired is actually communicating with you and your audience the right way. You might not even know what you want or what to look out for in your digital agency search, so we have put together a list of things to consider to make your search as pain-free as possible.

You need to actually like them

First and foremost, these people will, even if just in part, be a voice behind your brand and behind your business’ image.  If you don’t actually agree or get along with the people, why would you want them representing your business?  You will be working closely with a team, almost as if they are your own employee; you need to have effective communication and trust between each party in order to have the working relationship fit.

You need to know what you want

As a business, how do you envisage marketing supporting your goals? Brainstorm those ideas with your agency. There are many different marketing tactics which you may want your business to focus on, including:

  • Online advertising (PPC, Google Adwords, Facebook Ads, etc.)
  • Search engine marketing (SEM)
  • Website strategy, design and development
  • Blogging and content development
  • Email marketing
  • Social media marketing
  • Marketing automation
  • Analytics

You need a clear business vision and objectives in place for what you want any marketing initiatives to achieve. In a previously blog, we showed you how to set S.M.A.R.T marketing goals and objectives, and why they are so important. What are they promising?

You want to get great results. Your digital agency will want to get you these great results. But if the agency is promising you the stars, you’re going to be disappointed if/when they don’t deliver.  Digital marketing is a complex and ever-changing creature, it’s hard to guarantee something when there are so many variables in play at any given time. If an agency is promising to optimise your SEO, or that they will increase your conversion rate by 70%; they are likely giving you false and undeliverable promises just to gain your business.  Discuss your expectations and how the agency will aim to meet them in great detail during your brainstorming sessions. The more clarity you can gain during these meetings, the greater direction, and expectation of results you will achieve.

Check out their previous work

Depending on your industry or target market (find yours here), you may want your business or brand to have a certain personality; perhaps flirty and playful, or technical with a business tone.  When assessing potential digital agencies, be sure to check out the previous work they have done for clients. Do you like their tone or writing style? How is their SEM or SEO presence? When searching, were they the first to pop up on Google? If so, it can be assumed they know what they are doing and can use these practices to improve your SEO/SEM standing and drive more traffic to your business. In a nutshell, you can judge a marketing firm as a customer – after all, customers will be judging your business based on their marketing tactics.

In the end, finding the right digital agency for your business is a personal choice, but being aware of what’s out there and what they can deliver for your business is vital to your marketing success.  If you haven’t noticed already, selecting the perfect firm for your business won’t be the simplest process.  You have put a lot of hard work into your business, you need to know it’s marketing practices are in the right hands.
